Joel 1
1. The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel:
An Invasion of Locusts
2. Hear this, you elders; 2 give ear, all inhabitants of the land! 2 Has such a thing happened in your days, 2 or in the days of your fathers?
3. Tell your children of it, 3 and let your children tell their children, 3 and their children to another generation.
4. What the cutting locust left, 4 the swarming locust has eaten. 4 What the swarming locust left, 4 the hopping locust has eaten, 4 and what the hopping locust left, 4 the destroying locust has eaten.
5. Awake, you drunkards, and weep, 5 and wail, all you drinkers of wine, 5 because of the sweet wine, 5 for it is cut off from your mouth.
6. For a nation has come up against my land, 6 powerful and beyond number; 6 its teeth are lions' teeth, 6 and it has the fangs of a lioness.
7. It has laid waste my vine 7 and splintered my fig tree; 7 it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down; 7 their branches are made white.
8. Lament like a virgin[a] wearing sackcloth 8 for the bridegroom of her youth.
9. The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off 9 from the house of the Lord. 9 The priests mourn, 9 the ministers of the Lord.
10. The fields are destroyed, 10 the ground mourns, 10 because the grain is destroyed, 10 the wine dries up, 10 the oil languishes.
11. Be ashamed,[b] O tillers of the soil; 11 wail, O vinedressers, 11 for the wheat and the barley, 11 because the harvest of the field has perished.
12. The vine dries up; 12 the fig tree languishes. 12 Pomegranate, palm, and apple, 12 all the trees of the field are dried up, 12 and gladness dries up 12 from the children of man.
A Call to Repentance
13. Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; 13 wail, O ministers of the altar. 13 Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, 13 O ministers of my God! 13 Because grain offering and drink offering 13 are withheld from the house of your God.
14. Consecrate a fast; 14 call a solemn assembly. 14 Gather the elders 14 and all the inhabitants of the land 14 to the house of the Lord your God, 14 and cry out to the Lord.
15. Alas for the day! 15 For the day of the Lord is near, 15 and as destruction from the Almighty[c] it comes.
16. Is not the food cut off 16 before our eyes, 16 joy and gladness 16 from the house of our God?
17. The seed shrivels under the clods;[d] 17 the storehouses are desolate; 17 the granaries are torn down 17 because the grain has dried up.
18. How the beasts groan! 18 The herds of cattle are perplexed 18 because there is no pasture for them; 18 even the flocks of sheep suffer.[e]
19. To you, O Lord, I call. 19 For fire has devoured 19 the pastures of the wilderness, 19 and flame has burned 19 all the trees of the field.
20. Even the beasts of the field pant for you 20 because the water brooks are dried up, 20 and fire has devoured 20 the pastures of the wilderness.
